Volterra grew prosperous during medieval times mining alabaster, used to carve intricate artifacts and the craft is still carried on today. Lunch on your own to taste local food. Continue to Castellina Marittima and enter a scenario capable of bringing together the most characteristic aspects of the Tuscan landscape: hills cultivated with olive trees, vines and wheat, rows of cypress trees and lush Mediterranean vegetation, a natural habitat for wild boar and other wild animals. One of the most interesting things to discover in this town is its ancient link with the extraction and processing of alabaster. Visit the Ecomuseo dell’Alabastro, a structured museum itinerary that also involves the municipalities of Castellina, Santa Luce and Volterra. The Ecomuseum tells the importance of the alabaster quarries in this part of Tuscany, in particular in the Central Museal Point of Castellina the archive materials relating to the extraction processes are preserved. Breakfast and departure to the territory called “triangolo del tufo” which takes its name from the large tuff area on which the wonderful little towns of Pitigliano, Sorano and Sovana have been built. First stop is Pitigliano. Seen from afar, his sudden image hanging on the tufa cliff carved by ancient Etruscan tombs almost takes you aback: the town is inserted into landscape with such a compactness that it is almost impossible to separate the work of the people from the work of the nature. The village, dominated in the past by the Orsini family, is known as “the little Jerusalem” because of the Jewish community who came here in the 15th century and whose traces are preserved in the Jewish Ghetto. Lunch on your own to taste local food. Continue towards Sorano, which rises on tufa rock like Pitigliano. The houses on the high margin intertwine with each other and almost become one with the rock below. The center is dominated by the 14th century Orsini Fortress, one of the most beautiful examples of Renaissance military architecture. Our last visit is Sovana, a picturesque town with barely 120 inhabitants, once the capital of the rich Aldobrandeschi family. The roads approaching the town follow the traditional roads of the Etruscans, so the famous Etruscan tombs are in evidence everywhere. Its heyday was in the 11th century with the accession to the Papal throne of Gregory VII, born here, in Sovana. His house is now a museum of snails. Back to your hotel. Dinner on your own and overnight. ✓ INCLUDED • Accommodation in Ignas Tour’s Hotels – Treatment: BB • Private Car, Minibus or Bus for Full Day Excursion • Half Day Tour Guide in Pitigliano (2h) • Half Day Tour Guide in Sorano (1h30) • Half Day Tour Guide in Sovana (1h30)

EXTRA (M) | SAN MINIATO – VINCI |
Breakfast and departure to San Miniato, a medieval town in the province of Pisa, located halfway between Pisa and Florence. Since the Middle Ages, it has been considered strategic because it is situated atop three small hills, where it dominates the lower Arno valley, between the valleys of Egola and Elsa (three rivers that flow in Tuscany). In the Middle Ages, it was already congested because of its position: from one side there were friendly pilgrims passing through along the Via Francigena; from another side, there were armed and hostile people going to fight and defend their hometowns. San Miniato has a long history and was already known by the Etruscans and the Romans. In the XII century, the town was fortified with walls and defensive towers, which are still well preserved today. The town’s layout has remained intact and its medieval appearance is a reminder of the emperors who passed through area. Lunch on your own to taste local food. In the afternoon proceed to a small medieval town perched on top of mountain among Tuscan hills: Vinci, the birthplace of Leonardo da Vinci, symbol of the Renaissance, and whose name is inextricably linked to many places in Tuscany. The castle of the Conti Guidi houses a museum dedicated to the memory of Leonardo that displays a collection of all kinds of machines and prototypes, all created according to the original designs of Leonardo. Leaving Leonardo behind for a moment – not always easy here – we will explore also the traditional village beyond the castle and museum. Its historical center exudes a characteristic medieval atmosphere. Nearby, amidst the olive groves, is situated the house believed to be Leonardo’s birthplace. Back to your hotel. Dinner on your own and overnight. ✓ INCLUDED • Accommodation in Ignas Tour’s Hotels – Treatment: BB • Private Car, Minibus or Bus for Full Day Excursion • Half Day Tour Guide in San Miniato (2h) • Half Day Tour Guide in Vinci (2h) • Entrance Fee – Museo Leonardiano

Admire also the Church of San Domenico housing a Crucifix by Cimabue, the Pieve Santa Maria Assunta, the Cathedral, the church of San Donato. The Piazza Grande bordered by Vasari’s loggia is nothing short of a masterpiece and without doubt must be one of Europe’s most stunning. Lunch on your own to taste local food. In the afternoon proceed to Sansepolcro, famous as the town of Piero della Francesca, an early and influential Renaissance artist who was born and spent much of his life here. Stroll then around the charming town centre admiring the historic buildings and visit the Cathedral boasting some extraordinary works by artists such as Perugino. Admire the Archaeological Park of Baratti and Populonia, divided in acropolis and necropolis, which is nestled in between the promontory and the dramatically beautiful Gulf of Baratti.
