EXTRA (E)LAKE MAGGIORE – STRESA – BORROMEAN ISLANDS
Breakfast and departure to Lake Maggiore. Explore the little town of Stresa, recognised as the jewel of Lake Maggiore. Today Stresa still retains its aristocratic glamour, which is one reason that it has become a favoured venue for international conferences and events, hosted at the modern Palazzo dei Congressi (Conference Centre) or in the many luxury hotels that line the lakefront. The centre of Stresa, radiating from Piazza Cadorna, is full of shops, cafés and restaurants evoking the atmosphere of the Belle Époque which illustrious travellers like Stendhal, Chateaubriand, Dumas, Dickens and Lord Byron described in their writings. Afterwards continue by ferry to Isola Bella to see the 17th century baroque palace built by Carlo III of the House of Borromeo for his wife Isabella. Surrounded by terraced gardens that were inspired by the ‘Hanging Gardens of Babylon’, the palace was the scene of sumptuous and lavish parties, attended by the cream of European nobility. Then proceed to Isola Pescatori, the ‘island of fishermen’, with its narrow cobbled streets and pretty harbor. The island was thought to be first inhabited in the 10th century and there are now approximately 50 residents. Lunch on your own to taste local food. Finally visit is to Isola Madre. In contrast, to Isola Bella, Isola Madre has a simple, unspoiled aspect. The English romantic feel is due to re-working of the former Renaissance terraced gardens. Before coming back to Stresa take a look to The Rocca d’Angera, which proudly stands on a spur of rock that dominates the southern shores of lAKE Maggiore. Located in a strategic position to monitor the trade routes, it was house of the Visconti family from Verbano. During 1449 the Borromeo family acquired it.
