Day 2BOLOGNA – DOZZA
Breakfast and departure to visit Bologna. The red color of the bricks and the long arcades give the capital of Emilia a special charm. The medieval centre offers suggestive spots, animated by typical shops, and by the storm of students who since 1088 are part of the oldest university in Europe. The tour starts at Piazza Maggiore, the heart of Bologna with its main red colored buildings: the City Hall, the Podestà Palace, the most famous Neptune’s Fountain, the King Enzo’s Palace and the Sala Borsa. Admire the Basilica of Saint Petronio, one of the biggest churches in the world and the only one with the longest sundial in Europe. The tour will continue with a visit of the first seat of the University of Bologna, Archiginnasio and its famous Anatomy Theatre dated 1637. Afterwards walk through the historical Food Market towards the Gothic Merchants’ Palace and the Saint Steven’s Basilica, better known as the Seven Churches Complex. Lunch on your own to taste local food. In the afternoon discover Dozza, a medieval village, nominated as one of the “Most beautiful villages in Italy”. Its historical centre has the classic shape of a spindle: to this day the village’s medieval urban layout is unchanged, exactly as it grew, pressed within the ancient walls; the highest point is dominate by the imposing Rocca. The Rocca, or fortress, houses a museum that recounts its history and there is a Study Centre and Documentation Centre of the Muro Dipinto that includes sketches, archives and bibliographic documents. Dozza is known in the world precisely because here, art truly becomes urban landscape: the Biennale of contemporary art of the Muro Dipinto transforms the village into an open-air museum where hundreds of works by prestigious contemporary artists adorn the town’s walls. What was once the dungeon of the Rocca is now the Regional Wine Cellar (Enoteca Regionale). More than 800 select wines from the Emilia Romagna Region are displayed for study or purchase.  Back to your hotel. Dinner on your own and overnight.

Breakfast and departure to San Marino, the world’s oldest republic and Europe’s third smallest state. It lies 657 m above sea level with spectacular views of the surrounding countryside and Adriatic coast, and is situated only 10km from Rimini. Legend has it that the founder of San Marino, a stonemason, arrived from the island of Rab in Dalmatia and climbed Mt. Titano to found a small community of Christians, persecuted for their faith by the Emperor Diocletian. San Marino is made up of a few towns dotted around the mountain sides. The capital of San Marino is itself called ‘San Marino’ and is situated high up on a mountain top. The capital is surrounded by a wall and three distinct towers overlook the rest of the country. The site “San Marino: Historic Centre and Mount Titano” has become part of the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2008. Lunch on your own to taste local food. EXTRA (D)RIMINI – SANTARCANGELO
Breakfast and departure to Rimini, a maritime city that fulfilled the function of access from the Mediterranean to the whole Europe. A walk through the city is a travel through time that takes us through twenty-two centuries of history of a central city, from ancient Rome to Fellini, passing through the Middle Ages and Renaissance noble families. The classic itinerary of the historic center starts from the Roman Arena. The remains of this amphitheater are the last testimonies of grandiose shows of gladiators that amused the Rimini of the III century. As further proof of the importance of Rimini at the time of imperial Rome, continue with the Arch of Augustus, a monumental entrance to the Roman city of the first century BC. Walking along Corso d’Augusto, ancient “decumanus”, we reach Piazza Tre Martiri, ancient Roman forum transformed for centuries into the lively “piazza delle erbe” surrounded by shops and by the lovely sixteenth-century temple dedicated to Sant’Antonio da Padova. Walking along the ancient “cardo”, passing through Castel Sismondo, residence-fortress of Sigismondo Pandolfo Malatesta, lord of Rimini in the fifteenth century, and arrive in Piazza Cavour, the second forum of the Roman Rimini, which assumed a primary role from in the Middle Ages. Admire the facades of Palazzo Garampi (now the Town Hall), the medieval Palazzo dell’Arengo and Palazzo del Podestà, government buildings since the thirteenth century, and the eighteenth-century Pescheria. Lunch on your own to taste local food. In the afternoon continue to Santarcangelo di Romagna, a small medieval town with a charming atmosphere, attractive narrow streets, stairways and uphill walking paths. Along your way of walking you will see the old Fish Market  where the original San Marino stone counters are still visible, and the Marchi’s Printing Workshop, where you can see a 17th century mangle still used today to iron the traditional rust-printed fabrics and the antique carved pear wood molds used to print the canvas. Santarcangelo city center is a perfect and safe place for walking, as no motorized vehicles are allowed. For those who love wine, be ready to taste a delicious glass of Sangiovese, whose origins lies in Santarcangelo. Afterwards continue to the mysterious grottos of Santarcangelo, once used to preserve foodstuffs. Its origins, though, are still discussed today, as there is still talk of Etruscan tombs, early Christian caves, sepulchral chapels for the worship of the Indo-Persian god Mithra. Back to your hotel, dinner on your own and overnight.

EXTRA (E)MONTEFIORE – MONDAINO – MONTEGRIDOLFO
Breakfast and departure to the Conca Valley and reach Montefiore Conca, whose Malatesta Castle dominates the valley. The village has been awarded the title of one of “The Most Beautiful Villages in Italy” and an Orange Flag by the Italian Touring Club. The sight of its fortress, an imposing Malatesta building overlooking the Conca river valley, is quite literally breathtaking and the village, with its mediaeval layout, is equally fascinating and interesting. It is surrounded by woodland and gently rolling countryside, with the coast in the background and the sea on the horizon. Montefiore is a destination worth visiting at any time of year: in winter when the peaks surrounding it are white and there are living nativity scenes within its 14th-century walls, in spring when the countryside is in bloom and Easter rites take visitors back in time, in summer when the squares and courtyards of the fortress are filled with the sound of music and singing and host a variety of art festivals and shows and in autumn when the intoxicating fragrances and flavours of the earth, including chestnuts and extra-virgin olive oil, abound. Continue then towards Mondaino, a very picturesque village with its nineteenth-century square, semicircular and arcaded, and the setting for films and exciting historical re-enactments, within its walls. It has a strong musical imprint, thanks to the presence of a band and an accordion factory owned by the Galanti brothers. It is surrounded by unspoiled scrubland and fields where deer once pastured; indeed, they can still be seen near here and gave the town its name – “monte dei daini” or “mountain of roe deer”. Lunch on your own to taste local food. In the afternoon reach Montegridolfo, a medieval town where, in the past, it was only accessed through an ancient gate – tower with a drawbridge, now modified. This delightful and welcoming village, a castle mentioned as early as the 11th century, is largely intact and entirely protected by tall walls with a single entrance way and with a tower over the 16th-century gate.
