Day 2REGGIO CALABRIA – SCILLA – MOUNT SANT’ELIA – PALMI
Breakfast and departure to Reggio Calabria, the largest and most populous city in Calabria. It’s located on the “toe” of the Italian Peninsula and is separated from the island of Sicily by the Strait of Messina. Reggio has commonly used popular nicknames: The “city of Bronzes”, after the Bronzes of Riace that are testimonials of its Greek origins; the “city of bergamot”, which is exclusively cultivated in the region; and the “city of Fatamorgana”, an optical phenomenon visible in Italy only from the Reggio seaside. Admire the National Archaeological Museum of Magna Grecia, dedicated to Ancient Greece (which houses the Bronzes of Riace, a rare example of Greek bronze sculpture, which became one of the symbols of the city). Lunch on your own to taste local food. Travel to the coast where we find the stunningly-located fishing village of Scilla. What contributes to its beauty is the hill topped ancient fortress that towers over the village. Scilla is mythically the home of the fearsome monster Scylla who, along with Charybdis (over the sea towards Sicily) guarded the narrow Strait of Messina and menaced Odysseus / Ulysses as he sailed by. It is said that the castle dates back to the time of Ulysses. Afterwards reach Palmi, nestling in the rocks of Mt Sant’Elia. It is surrounded by the sea and the mountains that form a wonderful natural background. The origins are very ancient, dating back to Ancient Greece. The name of the town derives from the many palm trees that, together with century-old olive trees, stood in the area. A terrible earthquake razed the town to the ground in 1908 and caused hundreds of victims. Splendid architectural heritage was destroyed, including the precious Duomo and a theater. Back to your hotel. Dinner on your own and overnight.

Day 3PIZZO CALABRO – TROPEA – RIVIERA DEI GELSOMINI
Breakfast and departure to Pizzo Calabro, one of the most beautiful and renowned town and one of the most picturesque villages along the coast. Today, Pizzo is a modern town, a tourist resort renowned for the wide sand beaches and rock inlets, clear sea water and picturesque ancient village. The origins of Pizzo date back to Ancient Greece. Visit the Aragonese Castle where Joachim Murat was shot and have a taste of the famous ice cream “Tartufo di Pizzo”. Lunch on your own to taste local food. Continue to Tropea, a precious beautiful seaside town. Tropea is nicknamed the ‘Pearl’ of the Tyrrhenian Sea and for good reason. Not only does it boast magnificent walls, towers and gates but it also has a sandy beach so if the weather is just right, that might be a great option for the afternoon. The food item that Tropea is most associated with is the famous Tropea red onion. Exported for two thousand years, the red onion has built its reputation around Italy and the world thanks to its intense red colour and sweet taste, a feature that is not found in any other onion among the 50 existing types. Enjoy a tasting at a shop that is all about the local onion. Drive along the Riviera Dei Gelsomini, named after the perfumed jasmine flowers that are to be found in abundance. On the way back, visit of a bergamot plantation. Back to your hotel. Dinner on your own and overnight.

EXTRA (A)CAMIGLIATELLO SILANO – COSENZA – PAOLA
Breakfast and departure to Camigliatello Silano, a mountainous region where you can discover what food products it is best known for. Hear about Caciocavallo cheese (literally meaning cheese on horseback), which gets its name from the manner in which the cheese is always tied together in a rope and dangled over a wooden board to drain and age. Lunch on your own to taste local food. Continue to Cosenza and admire its historic center with the Cathedral UNESCO heritage, the Bretti and Enotri Museum and, in the modern part of the city, the MAB (Bilotta open-air museum) which collects precious sculptures of the most famous authors such as De Chirico, Dalì, Manzù. EXTRA (B)MORANO CALABRO – CASTROVILLARI – ALTOMONTE – CIVITA
Breakfast and departure to Morano Calabro and visit of the charming village. The buildings are so close to each other that they seem, against the backdrop of the Pollino, like a perfectly dreamlike conical hill, built by houses alone. Proceed to Castrovillari, a town notable for its summer jazz festival; many of the festival events are held in the medieval Aragonese castle. Visit the historic synagogue, which dates from the early Middle Ages, and 16th-century San Giuliano church. Lunch on your own to taste local food. Continue to Altomonte, a typical Calabrian town with numerous steep stairs and winding streets. The Gothic church of Santa Maria della Consolazione dominates the city. Finally reach Civita, one of the most ancient Albanian communities in Italy. Civita, founded in 1471 by Albanian families escaping from the Turks, was built on a pre-existing ruined town (Castrum Sancti Salvatoris) that had been destroyed by a violent earthquake in 1456. Back to your hotel. Dinner on your own and overnight.

EXTRA (C)LOCRI – GERACE
Breakfast and departure to Locri. Here you will visit the archaeological area of the famous Greek colony “Locri Epizephiri” founded in the VIII century b.C. This ancient city was the first to have a code of written laws, thanks to the will of the legislator Zaleuco, who used to prescribe specific penalties for each crime. The archaeological area of Locri extends from the river of the municipality of Portigliola to the coast. The archaeological site is quite distant from the current inhabited center and this has allowed us to preserve, at best, the remains of this civilization. Do not miss a visit to the Antiquarium Archaeological Museum of Locri where the treasures found in the archaeological site of the Hellenic and Roman period are kept. Lunch on your own to taste local food. Continue to Gerace, a town of the Norman era with one of the most precious historic centers in Calabria. Particularly intersting is the 12th century castle, the imposing cathedral with three naves, the church of S. Francesco from 1252. Back to your hotel. Dinner on your own and overnight.

EXTRA (D)VIBO VALENTIA – SORIANO CALABRO – SERRA SAN BRUNO – STILO
Breakfast and departure to Vibo Valentia. Admire the St. Leoluca’s Cathedral and the adjoining State Archeological Museum inside the Norman-Swabian-Angevin Castle, full of numerous specimens, mostly of Greek, such as the precious Laminetta Aurea, and finally the ruins of the Temple of the Goddess Persephone. Continue to Soriano Calabro, a small town surrounded by splendid olive groves, where you will see the ruins of Convent of San Domenico, best known for the unique event of the “miraculous descent” of the picture. Lunch on your own to taste local food. Proceed to Serra San Bruno. Just outside the historic center you will find the famous Certosa di Serra San Bruno, founded in 1091 by San Brunone di Colonia and first Carthusian convent in Italy. It suffered severe damage from the earthquake of 1783 and was rebuilt again. Proceed to the ancient Stilo, whose name is included in the list of the most beautiful hamlets in Italy. Worthy of a visit is the old town of Stilo, full of noble buildings and churches, that include the Duomo, built in 1300, the church of San Francesco, the church of St. George, the church of Madonna delle Grazie, the church of San Giovanni Theresti. Back to your hotel. Dinner on your own and overnight.

EXTRA (E)CROTONE – STRONGOLI – CIRO’ – ROSSANO
Breakfast and departure to Crotone. One of the most important Magna Graecia colonies in Italy, Crotone was a major cultural center in the 5th century BC, when it was the home of thinkers like philosopher and mathematician Pythagoras. Here you will admire the Cathedral, the Castle of Charles V and Le Castella is a walled hamlet on the island of Capo Rizzuto, close to Crotone. Its origins are not clear, but it was probably there in 500 AD. The castle can only be visited on foot since there is only a narrow strip of land that connects the island to Crotone. The castle dates back to several centuries and the architecture is quite noteworthy. Take a quick view of the charming town of Strongoli. Lunch on your own to taste local food. Continue to the famous wine region of Cirò. Considered one of the oldest named wines in the world, with a wine-making history stretching back thousands of years, this is Calabria’s flagship wine. Proceed to Rossano, renowned for its Byzantine history. Our guided tour of the old town will include the charming 10th-century church of San Marco, the Baroque cathedral and the newly refurbished Diocesan Museum, home to the Codex Purpureus Roassanenis, a rare 6th-century illuminated manuscript. Back to your hotel. Dinner on your own and overnight.
