Don’t miss the Harbor and its open-air fish market. Lunch on your own to taste local food and fish specialities. Continue to Polignano a Mare for a guided tour of the old town. The old name of the town, Polisnea, clearly indicates its Greek origins. It stands overlooking the sea on a steep, rocky cliff cut by a deep gorge. Because of the karst nature of this cliff a number of caves have been formed, particularly in the sea. Some of the these where inhabited by prehistoric man. Day 3 | MATERA – GRAVINA DI PUGLIA – ALTAMURA |
Breakfast and departure to Matera, the European Capital of Culture in 2019. This is a remarkable ancient town thought to be one of the first inhabited places in Italy. Originating as a prehistoric troglodyte settlement, Monks enlarged this maze of living spaces adding churches at the end of the first millennium. Astonishingly they are still largely intact and even today people live in the same cave houses. An entire town is here, with churches, shops, workshops, all hewn from rock! It has often been used as set for biblical films including the famous Mel Gibson’s “The Passion of Christ”. Lunch on your own, we suggest a typical Masseria. Drive to Gravina di Puglia, where there is a well-kept underground world, with tunnels, cellars, stone churches, granaries, seventeenth century ovens. From piazza Benedetto XIII leave the steps which lead to the oldest neighborhoods, amid medieval houses and stone churches, among which the one dedicated to the patron saint, San Michele. The discovering of the rock civilization of Gravina continues inside the Pomarici Santomasi Museum, which keeps important finds, such as frescos of the Stone Crypt of San Vito Vecchio. Continue to Altamura, a partially walled city renowned for its DOP bread. You will have time for a stroll through the old town with its claustra, so don’t forget to taste what many claim to be Italy’s best focaccia, made in a very old bakery with a wood-fired oven. Here you will enjoy a very delightful Apulian Bread & Focaccia Tasting. Back to your hotel. EXTRA (A) | ALBEROBELLO – OSTUNI |
Breakfast and departure to Alberobello, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Welcome to Itria Valley and its typical landscape characterized by dry stone walls that run along the country paths surrounded by Trulli – whitewashed cylindrical buildings with conical grey roofs, by manor farms, ancient millstones, olive groves, vineyards and cultivated fields. Visiting Alberobello you will notice that many Trulli are decorated with painted symbols on their roofs. They were built in a particular historical period, when the construction of stable dwellings was highly-taxed; the inhabitants of the region thus boasted a great capacity to adapt, and an exceptional cleverness in coming up with the idea for the Trulli, temporary houses built with the local stone. Guided tour through this area to see Casa d’Amore and Sant’Antonio Church. Lunch on your own based on typical products. Continue to Ostuni, known as the ‘White City’, based high on a hill top overlooking the region. The white-washed houses can be seen from afar and they blend perfectly with the soft and colourful hills giving to Ostuni its own special charm. Take a look to the cathedral dedicated to St Mary of the Assumption, the Piazza della Libertà with its 20-metrehigh obelisk, and the Museo di Civiltà Preclassiche della Murgia Meridionale with the extraordinary exhibit of a 25,000-year-old skeleton of a pregnant young woman. The church is truly monumental and probably has little in common with what you expect from a cathedral in an Italian town. With its soaring curves, curved roof and glass facade it is apparently the second largest church in Italy and can seat almost 7000 people. It is also remarkable from the artistic viewpoint, being enriched with many statues by the sculptor Giuliano Vangi (born in 1931), made of “Apricena” stone, the bronze cross and Altar Apricena stone, by Arnaldo Pomodoro.
